Canada Nickel (CNC) — Stock Analysis 2026 [3.3]
Analysis as of 22 October 2026. Price deck: base nickel US$17,000/t — the representative trailing average on the fixed US$13,000–21,000/t grid — with every grid price run as a scenario (deep bear US$13,000, bear US$15,000, base US$17,000, bull US$19,000, deep bull US$21,000) and the analyst consensus as a 0% cross-check — no spot price. Iron ore, the largest by-product, runs on its own US$100/t deck. At C$0.98 the shares price in a market-implied nickel deck of ~US$15,672/t. Market data is the 22 October 2026 TSXV close; figures are Canadian dollars unless marked US$. Refreshed on each permitting, financing or construction milestone. Rating: ★★★½ Solid / Modestly undervalued (wide band).
This Canada Nickel (CNC) stock analysis covers a company with one project to build: Crawford, near Timmins in Ontario, with 3,789 kt of nickel in proven and probable reserves and a 41-year mine plan in its 2023 feasibility study. The thesis in one line: the deposit is large, long-lived and low-cost on the study’s numbers, but the company has to raise about US$2.5 billion while it runs a working-capital deficit, so the funding terms decide how much of Crawford reaches today’s shareholder. Why now: the federal Decision Statement arrived on 31 July 2026, the construction permits are due in the third quarter of 2027, and a US$32 million bridge loan falls due on 9 November 2026. To compare Canada Nickel with every listed nickel company on reserves, grade and stage, use Metal Pilot’s nickel mining stock screener.
1. Snapshot & thesis
Canada Nickel Co. Inc. (TSXV: CNC; OTCQX: CNIKF), listed on the TSX Venture Exchange since February 2020, is a pre-production nickel company. By archetype it is a developer in the battery-metals sector (nickel): one feasibility-stage project, no production and no revenue. Crawford is wholly owned; around it the company holds the Timmins Nickel District, with published resources on nine properties, including Mann at 80%.

Thesis in brief. Bull: Crawford’s reserve is more than four times the largest in the peer set, and its iron and chromium concentrates pull the study’s net AISC down to US$1.54/lb, which keeps Crawford’s NPV positive even at US$13,000/t. Bear: the company owes more in the short term than it holds in cash, the build needs about ten times today’s market value, and 36.9% of the mine’s payable value is iron, chromium and other by-products whose prices the market does not quote alongside nickel. What tips it: the price and mix of the US$2.5 billion package.
How to read this analysis: the statcards and Section 9 give the verdict; Sections 2–6 give the evidence and Section 7 the valuation.
2. Assets & operations
Crawford is a large, low-grade nickel sulphide deposit; the Nickel — A Complete Market Guide explains the market it sells into.

Crawford is the whole valuation: no other property has an economic study, so the eight district resources add exploration upside but no modelled value. The district’s nine published estimates total 10.3 Mt of nickel measured and indicated at 0.24% and 13.2 Mt inferred.
2.2 Value and resources by asset
Canada Nickel has no revenue, so the two figures split the enterprise NAV and the nickel resource instead.

2.3 Crawford
Ownership and encumbrances. Canada Nickel acquired 100% of the Crawford Nickel Sulphide Project in 2020 and operates it. The patented lands carry a 2% net smelter return royalty, after Noble bought its 5% royalty in December 2019; a third party holds a 5% net profits interest, payable from commercial production, of which up to 2.5% can be bought back for C$2 million. Neither holder is named in the filings. The study assumes the buy-down and an impact benefit agreement not yet negotiated; together they cost US$1,990 million over the mine’s life. Samsung SDI holds an option to buy a 10% direct interest for US$100 million with a life-of-mine nickel offtake.
Stage and approvals. In hand: the federal Decision Statement under the Impact Assessment Act (31 July 2026). Outstanding: the provincial and federal construction permits (Q3 2027) and the provincial operating permits (Q2 2029). The company plans a 27-month build from Q4 2027 to first production in Q4 2029, two years later than the study’s 2028 first full year.
The mine plan. Phase 1 runs 42 months at 60 kt/d of ore; Phases 2 and 3 run 26½ and 11¼ years at 120 kt/d. Head grade falls from 0.26% in Phase 1 to 0.17% in Phase 3, and nickel recovery from 48% to 25%, so output peaks at 48 kt/yr in Phase 2 before easing to 18 kt/yr. Two products are sold at the mine gate: a nickel concentrate carrying cobalt and the platinum-group metals, and an iron concentrate carrying iron, chromium and some nickel.

Remaining capital and risk. All C$2,556 million of initial capital is still to spend. The one asset risk is the by-product dependence: credits of US$5.57/lb of nickel turn site costs into the US$1.54/lb net AISC, and iron alone is worth 19.9% of payable value at the study’s prices.
2.4 Other Timmins Nickel District properties
The district holds published resources but no studies. Deloro has 119 Mt indicated at 0.25% Ni and 498 Mt inferred; Nesbitt 24.5 Mt indicated at 0.23% and 152.1 Mt inferred; Bannockburn 63.2 Mt indicated at 0.28%; Midlothian 595.3 Mt inferred at 0.28%. Mann is held 80% through East Timmins Nickel. The regional properties carry vendor royalties of 1–2%, half of which the company can buy back.
2.5 Production, reserves & costs
Crawford’s reserve is 994 Mt proven at 0.24% Ni and 721 Mt probable at 0.20% under NI 43-101, effective 31 August 2023, with 215 kt of cobalt contained. The measured and indicated resource, inclusive of the reserve, adds 2,246 kt of nickel beyond the mine plan, and 3,726 kt sits in the inferred category.

2.6 Peer positioning
The peer set for every star in Section 9 is four nickel developers, none in a pending deal: Centaurus Metals (ASX: CTM), EV Nickel (TSXV: EVNI), Lifezone Metals (NYSE: LZM) and Talon Metals (TSX: TLO). Each is compared on quality metrics from its own filings as carried in Metal Pilot’s company data.

Quality metrics only.
Crawford’s reserve is the largest in the set by more than four times, and its study cost the lowest, but its grade is the lowest of the five: it trades grade for scale and by-products.
3. Financials & balance sheet
Canada Nickel reports in Canadian dollars under IFRS with a 31 October year-end. As a developer it has no revenue, EBITDA or operating margin; the lines that matter are the cash it spends, the debt that funds it and the shares it issues. The Financial Metrics guide explains each line.

Source: Canada Nickel’s FY2025, FY2024, FY2023 and FY2022 audited financial statements and Q3 2026 condensed interim statements (investors, SEDAR+). FCF = operating cash flow + exploration and evaluation spending. FY2025 and the nine months come from the statements that report them, FY2024 to FY2021 from the following year’s comparative column. FY2021 net debt is net cash: no loan was outstanding at 31 October 2021. The convertible note is excluded from net debt here and carried at face in Section 7.
Earnings and cash. Losses swing with non-cash items — FY2024’s C$3.2 m loss against C$14.8 m of operating cash burn — so cash flow, not net income, is the line to read. Spending on Crawford’s studies and permits ran C$37–57 m a year from FY2022 to FY2025, after C$19.4 m in FY2021 and is all growth capex; there is no sustaining capital before production.
The cost deck. The study guides net C1 of US$0.39/lb and net AISC of US$1.54/lb in real 2023 US dollars, on a head grade of 0.26% in Phase 1, 0.24% in Phase 2 and 0.17% in Phase 3. The price-linked lines are the 2% royalty, the net profits interest (assumed bought down to 2.5%) and an assumed impact benefit agreement — US$1,990 m together, 4.1% of net smelter return; the tax shield from resource pools is in the deferred tax note, but the pool balances are n/d.
Net debt and liquidity. At 31 July 2026 cash was C$8.1 m against C$48.1 m of bridge loans and a C$12.5 m convertible note carried below its C$20 m face; the working-capital deficit of C$47.4 m puts a going-concern note on the statements. The Auramet loan (US$32 m) was extended to 9 November 2026 at 1.25% a month with 5.5 m warrants at C$1.52; its covenants are described only as customary. The August 2026 placement raised C$21.0 m at C$1.50. The rehabilitation provision is C$1.7 m. No facility is committed: the US$600 m investment-tax-credit facility is proposed.
Hedge book. Unhedged — no derivative instruments in the statements; a 5% move in the US dollar changes pre-tax results by about C$1.5 m through the US$ bridge loan.
Capital returns and shares. No dividend or buyback. Basic shares were 258,799,171 on 16 September 2026, with 32.3 m warrants, 13.5 m options and 5.9 m restricted share units outstanding; the Taykwa Tagamou Nation note converts into 16.67 m shares at C$1.20. Weighted shares rose 50% from FY2023 to FY2025.
4. Management, strategy & structure
4.1 Management & governance
Mark Selby, previously CEO of Royal Nickel Corporation, is CEO and a director; Wendy Kaufman (CPA, CA) is CFO. The chair is David Smith, formerly Senior Vice President Finance and CFO of Agnico Eagle Mines. The board has eight named directors: David Smith, Mark Selby, F. Quinn, Chief B. Archibald of the Taykwa Tagamou Nation, Jackie Przybylowski, J. Ovens, J. Morais and K. S. Gill. The only committee named in the filings on hand is the Audit Committee, of directors not involved in operations; independence, tenure and the other committees are n/d, because the 2026 management information circular is not in the source set. Related-party transactions are key-management compensation (Q3 2026 statements, Note 15).
4.2 Strategy
The strategy is to build Crawford first and then the district around it, on published resources at nine properties. The funding plan is US$2.5 billion — US$1 billion of equity and US$1.5 billion of debt — with a proposed US$600 m tax-credit facility through SB1 Markets. Offtake work includes the Samsung SDI option and a memorandum of understanding signed on 6 July 2026 between NetZero Metals and RWEST, aiming at a definitive agreement by the end of 2026; it is not a completed offtake. Targets: construction from Q4 2027 and first production in Q4 2029.
4.3 Ownership & structure
The October 2026 presentation shows four strategic holders at 11 August 2026: Agnico Eagle 8.7%, Samsung SDI 6.0%, Anglo American 5.3% and the Taykwa Tagamou Nation 6.1% on conversion. Agnico Eagle holds pro-rata participation and board nomination rights; Anglo American subscribed under an investor rights agreement of 8 February 2023. The company acquired Crawford in 2020 and earned 80% of Mann, now held through East Timmins Nickel, where the 20% minority sits at C$2.5 m. Shares: 258.8 m basic and 298.0 m diluted on the treasury method at 16 September 2026; the company’s fully diluted count is 327.2 m.
5. ESG & sustainability
The licence to operate rests on two First Nations agreements. The Taykwa Tagamou Nation invested C$20 m in the company, and the Wabun Tribal Council signed an infrastructure contracting agreement; the impact benefit agreements are still to finalise. Crawford’s study books US$891 m of carbon revenue over the life, and the FEED update’s CCUS case lifts NPV to US$2.9 bn. The company published an ESG report on 6 October 2026, but it is not in the source set, so the safety rate, the reporting framework and decarbonisation targets are n/d.

Section 7 prices the funding gap (the equity raise), the stage risk (the 0.50× row weight) and the by-product decks; the bridge loan sits in its net debt.
7. Valuation
Valuation as of 22 October 2026, in Canadian dollars. Horizon: spot fair value. Price deck: base nickel US$17,000/t, the representative of the trailing averages of the LME cash price — US$16,575 (3-month), US$17,347 (6-month) and US$16,729 (12-month) to September 2026 — snapped to a five-column US$13,000–21,000/t grid in US$2,000 steps, with every grid price run as a scenario (deep bear US$13,000 / bear US$15,000 / base US$17,000 / bull US$19,000 / deep bull US$21,000). Iron, Crawford’s largest by-product, runs on its own deck — iron ore US$100/t (62% Fe), from 3-, 6- and 12-month averages of US$97.40, US$101.28 and US$102.26/t (World Bank Pink Sheet, iron ore 62% Fe CFR, to September 2026), on a US$70–110/t grid — held at that price in every nickel scenario; chromium is held at the study’s US$1.75/lb because no chromium price series is on record, and cobalt, the platinum-group metals and the carbon credits stay at the study’s prices. Discount rate 10% real, after-tax — the base-metals rate for a small, single-asset company — sensitised 8–12%. Share price C$0.98 (TSXV close, 22 October 2026); 298.0 m shares diluted (258.8 m outstanding, 5.9 m restricted share units, and 33.4 m warrants and options whose exercise prices are not disclosed, counted in full; the 12.5 m warrants at C$1.52 and C$2.25 and the TTN convertible note at C$1.20 sit above the share price); balance sheet at 31 July 2026 with the August 2026 placement; the US$ deck converts at US$1 = C$1.4021 (22 October 2026).
Canada Nickel is valued as a developer: Crawford holds a 2023 feasibility study and, since 31 July 2026, its federal Decision Statement, while the provincial and federal construction permits are due in 2027 and the US$2.5 bn build is not yet funded. The method follows the How to Value Commodity Stocks guide. Crawford is rebuilt from the feasibility study’s own year-by-year production and cash-flow schedule, moved two years later to the company’s current first-production date of late 2029 and re-priced at each nickel price, and carries its stage risk in a row weight of 0.50×, so the discount rate stays at the convention. The funding gap is about ten times the market capitalisation, so the equity share of the company’s funding plan is raised at a 10% discount to the share price in every scenario, and the new shares enter the count. The developer’s transaction-comparison and EV-per-reserve methods have no filed nickel deal and no nickel anchor to stand on, so the second weighted method is a free-cash-flow yield on Crawford’s first full production year, discounted back to today. The driver line (Table 14) sums to +0.04, so the targets move off their anchors to 1.04× P/NAV and a 6.7% FCF yield.

8.1 Takeover optionality
Crawford is the kind of asset a major buys rather than builds: a reserve of 3,789 kt of nickel with a 41-year plan in Ontario, past its federal approval. Against that sit a US$2.5 billion build, a 0.22% grade and a mine whose payable value is 36.9% by-products, which narrows the field to buyers that sell iron and chromium as well as nickel. Three of the four strategic holders have a contractual link, which is the only evidence this analysis admits for a buyer.
Table 21. Takeover case
| Element | Read |
|---|---|
| Target case | 3,789 kt Ni proven + probable, 41 years, federal Decision Statement in hand, Ontario |
| Disqualifiers | US$2.5 bn to build; 0.22% Ni grade; 36.9% of payable value in by-products |
| Holders with a sourced link | Agnico Eagle (8.7%; pro-rata and board nomination rights) · Anglo American (5.3%; investor rights agreement, 8 Feb 2023) · Samsung SDI (6.0%; option on 10% of Crawford for US$100 m) |
| Effect on the verdict | None — no bid is in the value; a sale to a strategic holder would replace the equity raise Section 7 assumes |

Figure data: Table 22. Each spoke prints its stars and weight; the dashed ring is the weighted composite, 3.31/5.
Table 22. Scorecard rationale — Canada Nickel, 22 October 2026
| Dimension | Weight | Score | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5. Balance sheet & funding gap | 15% | ★ | Cash C$8.1 m against C$48.1 m of bridge loans and a C$47.4 m working-capital deficit, with a going-concern note and the US$32 m Auramet loan due 9 Nov 2026; the C$2,581 m gap is 1,018% of market capitalisation — a red flag on any peer basis (Q3 2026 FS, 31 Jul 2026). |
| 7. Management & governance | 15% | ★★★ | The CEO ran Royal Nickel and the chair was Agnico Eagle’s CFO; three strategic holders carry investor rights; independence, tenure and committees beyond Audit are not on hand — the peer median on what is known (October 2026 presentation). |
| 1. Asset quality & scale | 15% | ★★★★ | 3,789 kt Ni proven + probable, more than four times Lifezone’s 867 kt at Kabanga, the next largest; but the lowest grade in the set, 0.22% against Centaurus’s 0.73% and Lifezone’s 1.98%, and one asset (technical report, eff. 31 Aug 2023; Table 5). |
| 3. Reserves, life & replacement | 15% | ★★★★★ | 1,715 Mt proven + probable supports a 41-year plan, twice EV Nickel’s 20-year PEA life; 6,035 kt Ni measured and indicated at Crawford and 10.3 Mt across the district (technical report; Q3 2026 MD&A; Table 5). |
| 2. Cost position & margins | 8% | ★★★★ | Study estimate: net AISC US$1.54/lb, an 80.0% margin at US$17,000/t, against EV Nickel’s US$4.87/lb PEA; it rests on US$5.57/lb of by-product credits (technical report Table 1-14; Table 5). |
| 4. Growth & optionality | 8% | ★★★★ | Phase 2 doubles throughput to 120 kt/d; the district adds 10.3 Mt Ni measured and indicated and 13.2 Mt inferred with no study — more unvalued resource than any peer’s whole reserve (Q3 2026 MD&A). |
| 6. Capital allocation & returns | 8% | ★★ | No dividend or buyback; weighted shares up 50% from FY2023 to FY2025 and bridge debt at 1.25% a month to carry the studies; peer dilution figures are not on hand, so the score rests on the company’s own record (FY2025 FS; Q3 2026 FS Note 19). |
| 8. Jurisdiction & geopolitics | 8% | ★★★★ | Ontario with the federal Decision Statement (31 Jul 2026) and construction permits due Q3 2027 — the jurisdiction of EV Nickel’s CarLang, ahead of Lifezone’s Tanzania and Centaurus’s Brazil (Q3 2026 MD&A; Table 5). |
| 9. ESG & licence to operate | 8% | ★★★ | Taykwa Tagamou Nation C$20 m equity and the Wabun agreement, impact benefit agreements still open; safety and framework data not in the source set, nor peer ESG data, so the score rests on the company’s own record (Q3 2026 MD&A; release of 6 Oct 2026). |
| Composite | 100% | ★★★½ | Solid |
Source: as cited per row — Canada Nickel’s Q3 2026 filings and the Crawford technical report on SEDAR+; peers per Table 5. Every score is relative to the peer set declared in Section 2.6.
The arithmetic: 0.15 × (1 + 3 + 4 + 5) + 0.08 × (4 + 4 + 2 + 4 + 3) = 1.95 + 1.36 = 3.31/5 → ★★★½ Solid. Developer weights put the balance sheet, management, the asset and the reserve at 15% each and the other five at 8%.
The two-axis verdict: Solid (★★★½) and Modestly undervalued (wide band), implied +19.2%, as of 22 October 2026 → re-rating candidate — the catalyst is the Crawford financing package.
The two axes answer different questions. The quality score rests on a reserve and a jurisdiction no financing changes; the value read rests on the stage weight and the price of the equity raise, which the next year of news will move.
The shares price in a market-implied nickel deck of ~US$15,672/t, below the 12-month average of US$16,729/t; the target multiples carry Dimensions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 (+0.04). Bull: the package closes with less equity or at a higher price, and nickel holds above ~US$17,742/t, where the read turns Undervalued. Bear: a deeper discount, a permit slip, or nickel below ~US$16,362/t turns it Fairly valued. 10. Sources, methodology & disclaimer
10.1 Sources, methodology & data vintage
Company filings. Canada Nickel’s Q3 2026 condensed interim financial statements and MD&A (balance sheet, debt, shares, approvals), the FY2025 and FY2024 audited financial statements and MD&As, the FY2023 and FY2022 audited financial statements, the October 2026 investor presentation and the releases of 31 July and 6 October 2026, from canadanickel.com and SEDAR+.
Technical basis. The Crawford NI 43-101 feasibility technical report (effective 1 October 2023, November 2024 revision; reserves effective 31 August 2023), including its year-by-year production and cash-flow schedule; the Bannockburn and Midlothian resource reports; the 2025 FEED metrics as reported in the FY2025 MD&A.
Market and peer data. Share price C$0.98 at the 22 October 2026 TSXV close per Yahoo Finance; USD/CAD 1.4021 per the Bank of Canada; nickel and iron ore monthly averages from the World Bank Pink Sheet to September 2026; peers from their filings as carried in Metal Pilot’s company data (Table 5).
Methodology. Archetype: developer. The scorecard uses the developer weights against four peers. The valuation blends risked P/NAV (55%) and FCF-yield support (45%) on a base nickel deck of US$17,000/t — the representative trailing average on the US$13,000–21,000/t grid, with every grid price run as a scenario — and iron ore at US$100/t, at 10% real; the consensus target is a 0% cross-check. Data as of 22 October 2026; refreshed on each permitting, financing or construction milestone.
Re-run log. 23 October 2026: first publication — a new analysis on the current template; at C$0.98 the fair value is C$1.17, implied +19.2%, Modestly undervalued (wide band); quality 3.3/5 Solid. 23 October 2026, pre-publication review: the iron-ore deck’s source and date, the Figure 7 notes, the funding and FCF-yield workings’ notes, a seventh gap (the Mann minority) and two Table 6 cells added; NAV/share C$1.17, fair value C$1.17, implied +19.2% and the read unchanged.
Omitted figures and data gaps. The asset map, a Section 3 financial chart (no revenue) and a Section 5 safety trend (no safety data on hand) are not built. Not in the source set: the 2026 management information circular (board independence and committees), the 2025 ESG report (safety, framework), an analyst-consensus capture, the Reid, Mann and Texmont resource rows, the royalty holders’ names and a chromium price series. The model’s full printout — P/NAV map, deck sensitivity, cross-checks, secondary decks and the nickel × iron ore grid — is claude/valuation-models/canada-nickel-cnc.out.md.

This analysis is for information only and is not investment advice. It is a point-in-time snapshot as of 22 October 2026: the price, the valuation and the verdict move with the market and the nickel price, and a pre-production developer’s value swings on financing, permitting and construction news. Reserves and study economics are estimates, not results. The quality rating and value read are analytical judgements, not a recommendation to buy or sell.
